Israeli Documentarian Efrat Lachter

April 27@ 7:00 pm

Congregation Beth El Norwalk, Norwalk, CT, 06851

Efrat Lachter will be here on Sunday, April 27, 7 pm, to discuss her recent documentary, “Whitewash”.  Every year, thousands of children fall victim to modern-day slave traders in Malawi. Human traffickers abduct boys and girls alike and sell them in neighboring states and even in the Persian Gulf.   In the film, we follow the story of Triza, who we met the day she was liberated from captivity, a 14-year-old pregnant girl, and arrived to Beit Israel, a shelter in Malawi established By Nir Guez.

Nir is an Israeli millionaire with ties to the FBI and DEA. He spent years in East Africa, making a fortune by exploiting the countries and their people. There was nothing his money couldn’t buy once he knew whose palm to grease.  And no one dared interfere with Nir, who was also an undercover agent for the FBI and DEA.

Seeking redemption and absolution for his past, he set up a shelter to help girls rescued from human traffickers. It seemed promising at first. Until the corrupt system he nurtured for decades, became a threat to his attempt to build his legacy. Can he really give those desperate children, and himself, hope?

We will preview the film and then have a discussion.  This event is free but for security purposes, advanced registration is required.  Here are some scenes from the documentary.
