Community Yom HaShoah at Beth El Norwalk

We were so pleased to host the annual Fairfield County Jewish Community Yom HaShoah commemoration.  A packed room listened to 92-years-young Shoah survivor Manny Korman tell his story of being accepted to the Kindertransport and leaving behind his parents.  He shared how he–a rebellious 7-year-old–used his age to keep himself, his 10-year-old brother, and a new friend they met on the transport together when they reached England.  He told of his father being held in Holland and his mother’s escape from Poland to Germany to Italy and eventually the United States.  Unlike many testimonies, Manny’s experience has an incredible happy ending, with all four members of his family reuniting in New York.  Today, Manny and his brother remain very close, and they have built large and loving families.

At a time when antisemitism casts a long shadow over our lives as Jews, this was an opportunity to draw strength in Jewish community.  Rabbis and Cantors from Norwalk, Westport, and Bridgeport offered teachings, readings, and song, and all participants were able to light yellow candles in memory of the 6 Million.  May their memories be a blessing.
